When Things Fall Apart Together

Inspirations from Contact Improvisation Dance for the Field of Rehabilitation
Wednesday | December 9, 2026 | 17:30–21:30 | Be’er Sheva
As part of the Israeli Contact Improvisation Festival | Exact location to be announced
Dance Performance | Experiential Workshop | Multidisciplinary Panel
Contact Improvisation is a dance form rooted in improvisation, embodied exploration, relationships in motion, and playful engagement with weight and gravity. Encounters between different bodies, with diverse abilities and changing needs, open up possibilities for exploring listening, support, consent, interdependence, and choice.
What happens when we bring these values and principles into conversations about rehabilitation, particularly trauma rehabilitation? How might a dance form that is not oriented toward a predetermined outcome inspire new ways of thinking about power relations, autonomy, agency, and belonging?
This event invites an encounter between the Contact Improvisation community and professionals in rehabilitation, therapy, healthcare, education, and research; people with lived experience; and anyone curious to explore the intersections of art, embodiment, and relationships.
Inspired by international models of Arts on Prescription and Social Prescribing, which integrate participation in arts and culture into community-based support and healthcare systems, we seek to explore what the art of dance might contribute to how we think about rehabilitation.
Our intention is not to present Contact Improvisation as a method of therapy or rehabilitation, but rather to invite learning from the artistic and embodied knowledge developed within the field of dance, and to consider how this knowledge might expand both discourse and possibilities for action in other fields.
Evening Programme
17:30–18:00 | Dance Performance: When Things Fall Apart Together
An inclusive Contact Improvisation performance exploring relationships between bodies, objects, weight, support, interdependence, and choice. The performance will serve as an artistic and experiential point of departure for the rest of the evening.
18:00–20:00 | Contact Improvisation Workshop: Weight, Support, and Choice
An experiential workshop open to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. Through encounters with gravity, the floor, objects, and other bodies, we will explore possibilities for movement, listening, support, and weight sharing.
The workshop will offer a gradual, trauma-informed experience in which every participant is free to choose how they wish to participate and their level of physical contact. No previous dance experience is required, and interpersonal touch is not a prerequisite for participation.
20:00–20:30 | Break
20:30–21:30 | Professional Panel: Inspirations from Contact Improvisation Dance for the Field of Rehabilitation
A conversation bringing together artists, Contact Improvisation teachers, rehabilitation and therapeutic professionals, and collaborators to explore the possibilities and limitations of encounters between dance and rehabilitation, particularly trauma rehabilitation, as well as opportunities for research and collaboration.
Who Is This Event For?
Contact Improvisation dancers and practitioners, movement teachers and facilitators, therapists and rehabilitation professionals, healthcare and education professionals, researchers, people with lived experience of trauma and disability, and the general public.
The event is also open to those who have never experienced Contact Improvisation.
Initiators and Facilitators: Liza Futerman, Lex Shcherbakov, and Esti Mitrani-San.
The event offers an artistic experience, learning, and embodied exploration. It does not constitute psychological treatment or a rehabilitation process.
We look forward to meeting, moving, and thinking together about the possibilities that emerge when different fields of knowledge encounter one another, without any of them having to relinquish their distinct identities.

In Summary
The vision underlying this event is to broaden the conversation about rehabilitation, and trauma rehabilitation in particular, moving beyond the question of how to repair or rehabilitate an injured body toward a different question:
How can we create conditions in which every body can rediscover its possibilities for choice, movement, relationships, and presence in the world?
Contact Improvisation does not offer a single answer to this question. It does, however, offer a rich language of listening, weight, relationships, and improvisation that may expand how we think about rehabilitation.
Kindly,
